The book comprises twelve brilliantly woven stories, set against the incredible milieu of rural Punjab, India.
In spirit, it is a collection of love stories. Each story pulsates with a different form of love, longings, and obsessions. ‘The Father’s Shoe’ skewers the deep-rooted super structure of patriarchy and violence. In ‘Johnny’, a little boy lives through the grief of losing his brother to honour-killing and finally fights it. ‘The School Bag’, emerging through a fantastical aspect, highlights the gulf between the rich and the poor as Lakha wishes to get a new school bag. The story ‘Not a God’s Man’ fiddles with the idea of religion, juxtaposing it with abject poverty. In ‘Pali’s Home Visit’, Pali who has recently been married, wants to know if her family still loves her and misses her as much as she does. ‘Beauty is a Myth’ is about a woman, ugly by the established standards of beauty set by society, who finds love and then loses it.
These stories take us through the dilemma of existentialism and disillusionment, appealing to the heart and mind, in equal measure.
